Seeking one male dancer
• Step 1 is to read the information below.
• If you think you’re a good match, Step 2 is to DM us on Instagram with a short video introducing yourself and links to a decent video of you dancing or your website or whatever you think is appropriate.
• If we think you’re a good match, Step 3 is us getting together.
As a team, we’re looking for folks who both fit in and add something new. Those qualities are hard to describe exactly. So if things don’t work out, please don’t take it personally. The selection process in dance can be disturbing, and we want you to stay confident and persistent. Thanks for your interest.
ABOUT US
SB Dance is a creative lab that specializes in unusual performance and innovative formats. For the next couple of years, we’re focusing on Curbside Theater, an outdoor, small-stage program that has transformed how we reach audiences and has a ton of potential for growth. Stephen directs in rehearsal but the environment is non-hierarchical and everyone contributes ideas. Zero tolerance for assholes, prima donnas, abuse, or harrassment.
REQUIREMENTS
• Primary requirement are artists who are theatrical, creative, and athletic. Technical skills also important.
• Please take into consideration that our work is edgy, especially relative to Utah, with non-mainstream character portrayals and themes. Profanity, nude or nearly nude, and disturbing dramatic situations could be part of a show. (We’re careful and have policies to keep people safe when we develop this sort of content.)
• In general, SB Dance works with movers who have stage experience in dance, theater, devised movement, or similar disciplines.
• We welcome all ages, backgrounds, and identity. For our purposes, “male” means a person who can toss smaller people in the air and sometimes play men’s roles in a dramatic scene; “female” means someone who can be tossed in the air, lift their leg really high, and play women’s roles in a scene. If you’re a little of both, even better.
• If you’re just out of school and all you want to do is dance dance, then this might not be the right fit. If you’re kinda a weirdo, and want to have time for a job or family while also being an artist, then this might be the place for you. You choose us as much as we choose you. Please go online to get to know us: this Vimeo showcase; sbdance.com; curbsidetheater.com; and Insta.
WORK, SCHEDULE, PAY
We work as part-time independent contractors and together we work out the schedule. The basic 2023 schedule is below. We work around important events like family weddings. Many have day jobs so we mainly rehearse evenings, typically 5:30-8:30pm, usually the Salt Lake Avenues or nearby.
Pay for 2023 is $20/hr rehearsal and $125 per local Curbside show, which is usually about a 2 hr commitment onsite. Tours are $50/day per diem. Estimated pay for 2023, assuming about 20 shows plus rehearsals, will be around $5,250. That’s not a full time job, obviously. Neither is it full-time work. Generally speaking, during focused periods of building new work, we rehearse 3-4 nights per week, 3 hrs per rehearsal. During the performance season, we perform 2-3 times per week.
